Electricity is currently used as an alternative fuel given its ability to create mechanical power directly whereas other alternative fuels release stored chemical energy through combustion to provide mechanical power. The electricity can be provided by a battery or via fuel cells. Unlike batteries, fuel cells convert chemical energy from hydrogen into electricity.
